It’s crazy how getting your video and photography equipment in a manageable cabinet and basically cleaning up can affect your overall attitude about wanting to be in a room or workspace. As you can see, there has been a vast amount of work put in to organizing, downsizing, and generally tidying up my office. (#konmari)

The updated office.

Gear Cabinet and light stand holder.

In addition to putting my gear into a dedicated gear cabinet, I also hung up a light stand holder, put up hooks to hold cords, purchased and built a new closet file cabinet (not pictured), sold my desk, sold my old file cabinet, and also took down and sold my hanging wall unit.

There were several reasons for selling off the old office furniture. First off, it was rather large, like borderline obnoxiously large. The desk itself came out from the wall at the long end at 47” or nearly 120cm.  For a desk that size in a room that is 10’ x 10’, it dominated the space. Plus, I realized that over the years, if given the space to do it, I would place random papers and basically clutter the desk with junk and camera stuff. See my first blog post on organizing to see what my old desk looked like on an everyday basis before this organization and cleaning project happened.

The desk that I replaced it with is much better. Miles better really. It’s a desk that I can use to work standing up if I choose. Also, it can raise up so that my chair can be pushed underneath it when I am done working.  You wouldn’t think that having that option is a big deal, but trust me, it is.  In addition, the actual footprint of the desk is much smaller. I used to have a MacPro that had a large monitor and on its own took up a lot of space. I use my Macbook Pro exclusively to run my business and also do my editing so I no longer had a use for a large desk.

Once I downsized the desk, the wall unit just looked rather silly “floating” on the wall above the desk. Plus, the desk has a sit stand feature and it raised up so high that I could not see my screen, so onto the selling block it went. Basically, the only thing left from my old Ikea set of office furniture is a large standing cabinet that has some larger items in it.

Empty floor where gear used to reside.

All of this organizing and cleaning has made for a much happier and better workspace. It has been a lot of work getting to this point, and this is exactly the change that I needed to move forward with Airdale, work better and more efficiently, and see better days in the future. I had been putting it off for a long time and now I don’t know why it took me so long. Such is life.

Cheers.
